Sametime Server Update

Chris Miller posted an IBM Technote the other day. It's titled "Notes Instant Messaging encounters a looping condition causing the Sametime server to become unresponsive or to hang."

This is what I've been dealing with for a long time, as you can see from my posts here. I realized that I haven't given an update on this. Actually, we went 12 days with no problems and then we had 1 hang yesterday and 2 so far today. So it's extremely sporadic.

I was speaking just two days ago with a Domino for iSeries Support technician at IBM about another call. He asked me how the Sametime server has been and I told him that it's progressively better the more users we migrate to 7.0(.1). He did say that IBM hopes to have a server-side fix for this possibly in the next couple of months. But don't quote me on that...

While we're talking about Sametime, have any of you upgraded to Sametime 7.0 on iSeries yet? I posed that question to a Domino for iSeries list and two people have stated that they are having problems getting the DWA/Sametime integration functional after upgrading. We have a lot of Sametime users in DWA, so I'm glad I have postponed that upgrade.

And I Thought EOL for OS/2 Had Passed

As I blogged about this in July and August, we were getting rid of the last OS/2 system my workgroup supports. According to IBM Technote 1230555 that just hit my Bloglines, the end of life (EOL) for OS/2 will be 12/31/2006. The technote states that "Support beyond December 31, 2006 is available for a fee through Service Extensions or Total Content Ownership contracts."

In my experience this is almost better than IBM's current support for OS/2. Even though we rarely had problems with it, we would call IBM and were told that support was non-existent. On more than one occasion our IBM hardware service technician had to come onsite and call someone at IBM in Arizona to get support for the OS/2 system since we could not directly get support.

If "only the good die young" is true, then OS/2 was really good!

Notes Smart Upgrade Tracking (Show-n-Tell Thursday)

How many of you use Notes Smart Upgrade? I find some great value in this tool. It is the method we use to keep clients up to date. I would just like to "Show-n-Tell" what I've manually implemented for tracking this in the pre-6.5.3 timeframe and what Lotus provides in the post-6.5.3 Lotus Notes Clients.

Pre-6.5.3
Before Notes/Domino 6.5.3, there was no out of the box way to track client upgrades - much less Smart Upgrade. This method is something that I still use to get an overview of the clients we have and this can be used regardless of whether you use Smart Upgrade or another method. The first thing I did was create a view in the Domino Directory that displays some brief information on the client version:

There's not really much to this view. To make the first column display nicely, I just have the following formula: @RightBack(ClntBld;" "). The only other thing I have involved with this is an agent to change the ClntBld field of selected documents. This is very helpful to allow me to keep the numbers correct. As clients are upgraded, the old Client Builds are maintained. This is not helpful for the purpose of my tracking. So as batches of clients are upgraded I simply run the agent to make sure that the Client Build field only has one entry. This just keeps the same document from displaying in multiple categories. As another tip for this method, make sure that as you are modifying the Client Build fields that you start with the most recent versions.

Post-6.5.3
With Notes/Domino 6.5.3 and later, Lotus provides a Smart Upgrade tracking database. Below you can see the options in the outline:

This is really handy because it allows you to see how the client was or wasn't upgraded and there are views for Failed, Cancelled, or Succeeded upgrades. The Notes 6.5.3 Client has the code that sends the information to the Smart Upgrade Tracking database as defined in the "Mail-in Database for Smart Upgrade Tracking reports" field on the Desktop Settings document in the Smart Upgrade tab. And, of course, the template doesn't ship with pre-6.5.3 Domino servers.

Potential DoS Vulnerability in Domino LDAP Server Task

I had someone forward this to me. I don't recall seeing it in the blogs, but the IBM technote was updated on 2/10/2006:

Potential Denial of Service Vulnerability in Domino LDAP Server Task

Problem:
A specially crafted bind request sent to the LDAP server port can result in a Lotus Domino server crash. If successfully exploited, this vulnerability allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to crash the LDAP service preventing legitimate usage.

This issue was reported to IBM Lotus by iDEFENSE. The advisory address is as follows:

IDEF 1173: Lotus Domino LDAP Server Bind Command DoS
http://www.idefense.com/intelligence/vulnerabilities/display.php?id=389

Solution:
This issue was reported to IBM Lotus Quality Engineering as SPR# JBUD6FMQST and fixed in Domino 6.5.4 FP2, Domino 6.5.5, and Domino 7.0.1.
Refer to the Upgrade Central site for details on upgrading Notes/Domino.

A workaround for previous releases is to limit access to TCP port 389 on the LDAP server to only allow trusted hosts to connect.

Note: This issue does not affect Domino servers that are not running the LDAP server task.

Wonder If This Phrase Catches On?

I've never heard anyone say this, but I doubt I coined it...

Bush Spied; Nobody Died

Rather pithy like the other version of it that so many people like to use. I hope it catches on!

While I'm on the topic, I was recently informed of Section 1802 of the FISA law which allows for warrantless electronic surveillance. I began looking at this section and it is still somewhat vague to me whether or not the current surveillance is legal.

Go read the very first part and you can see that it allows for warrantless surveillance of those parties who are defined in "section 1801 (a) (1), (2), or (3)". Now had this stated "section 1801 (a) (1), (2), (3), or (4)", then there would probably be no question as to the legality of this. This is because the party described in (4) is "a group engaged in international terrorism or activities in preparation therefor". I do believe that the main reason for this current surveillance is simply to stop terrorism mainly caused by Al-Qaeda.

In an interview on FoxNews with Chris Wallace on January 8, 2006, Rep. Jane Harman, D-CALIF, gave some great details about the program and confirmed that the program was aimed at terrorists:

HARMAN: But it was made clear to me that conversations between Americans in America were not part of the program and require — and I think they do — a court warrant in order to eavesdrop on them.

And that's been a point of confusion, because some of the press articles allege that this is a so-called, as you said, domestic surveillance program. That's not what I believe it is.....

You should really read the entire interview - Representative Harman has some good points. But getting back to the FISA Section 1802, it appears that it was basically followed and that the warrantless searches can be legal for one year. In some senses of the term, the terrorist could be accurately designated as a "faction of a foreign nation or nations".

I'm still not entirely certain about this. We do know for certain that the Brooklyn Bridge is still intact (and many lives saved) due to this program and it's murky as to whether this program played a role in preventing an attack on the US Bank Tower in Los Angeles.

So, what say you?

BlackBerry Multi-Mode Edition Software FAQ

The document linked below details BlackBerry's Multi-Mode Edition software. This will be released in the event that an injunction is made against RIM in their patent dispute case with NTP. The software is a workaround that will bypass the claims of the patents.

Initially, I understood that no updates would need to be made to the BES or devices. But if the injunction is made, the BES and devices will need to be patched.

A "Micro"-"Soft"ware Company

So, what exactly is in a name? While I could probably spin some FUD their way bases solely on the meaning of "Microcomputer Software" Corporation (a.k.a. Microsoft), I will hold back some. As history shows, Microsoft acquired their foothold by developing Operating Systems for "IBM Compatible" microcomputers. On the other hand we have Microsoft's biggest threat in International Business Machines. To me the names alone say a lot about the companies...

That being said, I have been thinking of Ed Brill's post back in December requesting comments on the largest deployments of Domino on a single server. Many customers consistently had over 12,000 users. There were even some that had over 30,000 and one chimed in on running over 59,000 users in a 2 way cluster for failover. This is truly amazing! I know that with the size of my organization that we fall within the "Small to Medium Business" (SMB) category for IBM.

But how would Microsoft view my company?

Looking at a TechNet article on "Recommendations for Large Organizations", we read that "The recommendations for medium organizations are also applicable to large organizations that have more than 1,000 users". There is even a graphic depicting "A large Exchange 2003 organization that has three server locations". In the graphic there are a total of 5 Exchange 2003 Mailbox Servers with an additional 2 cluster servers and a "front-end server farm". The total number of users in this implementation is 12,000 users - which is a fairly big implementation. But you're still looking at software designed for the "micro" world - thus requiring more and more servers for scalable environments.

Reading Microsoft's "Exchange Server 2003 Product Overview", we read the answer as to the likely scalability limit for single Exchange 2003 servers: "With Exchange Server 2003, however, the number of supported users and mailboxes can easily be in the 3,000–5,000 range or more, depending upon the user profiles, message traffic patterns, and mailbox size limitations." I suppose we could debate what the "or more" means, but they're basically saying that you should not have more than 5,000 users per server. Compared to some of the Domino implementations, this scenario would require 10-20 servers to service over 50,000 users (depending on the clustering scenario).

So what does this say to me, you ask? I personally believe it speaks volumes about the role IBM plays in this game of collaboration software. Not only does IBM offer great value from Notes/Domino to small businesses, but they offer truly scalable software (and hardware) solutions. It tires me to continally read how great Microsoft is (though all comparisons show that IBM meets or exceeds what Microsoft offers in direct product comparisons). After going to Lotusphere 2006, the best one I've attended, there should be no doubt whatsoever in the minds of anyone that IBM is on the offensive. The Guardian article is completely ridiculous. Most of our users could probably care less about the e-mail client being used. We purchased Notes/Domino because of the benefits it provided beyond mail and PIM. E-mail was just a little bonus! And we have a ton of users who are deriving immense value from Lotus.

Notes 7.0.1 Upgrade Prompt

I've placed a call with Lotus Support to see why this is happening. I have tried running the Admin and Standard Notes 7.0.1 setup for several users. Three of the 4 I tried have received this box. I've never seen previous upgrades of Notes prompt to close individual applications. Has anyone else seen this on 7.0.1 or prior versions?

I am going to see if the silent install via Smart Upgrade will keep this message from appearing. But when I set up my Smart Upgrade kit (as I always have in previous upgrades) with the Deploy Version as "Release 7.0.1", it fails stating that there were no matching kits found in the Smart Upgrade database. I have verified that the Settings and Policy documents have "Release 7.0.1" as well. I'm placing a call about the Smart Upgrade thing too. Will let you know what I find out on both.

RIM Workaround

Here's a trackback to the RIMBlackBerryNTP Blog detailing the "workaround" that we've been reading about.

It does seem like a fairly seamless workaround. Though I agree with the concerns of not being able to read and respond to emails when you are not in coverage. I'm not familiar with all of the semantics regarding "push" and "push-pull". Effectively the workaround is for RIM to push only some headers to the phone and when viewing the message the handheld will pull the rest of the body. Back to the semantics, is this not what RIM now does with the exception of pushing headers plus a truncated body? Many times I will have to initiate the pull to read messages longer than a certain length. But I guess those semantics are meant for the courtroom. Hopefully this will all work out since we just placed an order to double the number of licenses on our BES.

Commitment (LS06)

I'm still trying to recap the Lotusphere 2006 week in my mind. On Thursday morning, I was thinking to myself that if there is one thing that we should take away, it is IBM/Lotus' commitment to the Lotus software products. This word was re-iterated in the closing session. If it hasn't been the case in the past when we have said we're on the offensive, we should know without a doubt that IBM is in this for the longhaul!

Session Evaluations (LS06)

I was able to review the evaluations from our session. It was great to see all of the positive things that were said. It makes all of the preparation worthwhile to see that people find the information helpful and implementable.

Here are basically all of the written comments:

- More before and after
- links to Redbooks or tech center (There were some links at the end of the slides.)
- "excellent for even experienced iseries shop" (This was great to hear! We were hoping that newbies and experienced admins would be able to get something from this.)
- wanted more time for material (We wanted more time as well - that's why there was less before/after and no mention of disk.)
- "best session I have been to in years" and this was from one "considering iseries" (WOW - thanks!)
- should mention disk next time (We will definitely try to update this and hopefully present again together!)
- "can be taken back and put in place" (Great to hear that you can start using this!)

Apology to Gab and All

This needs to be something public for all eyes, so I would like to offer my apologies to Gab for my post the other day. While I did not mean for it to be taken personally, it was. I'm sorry.

To those who have read the now defunct posts (mine and hers), I am also sorry for any stain on the community caused only by me. As we had mentioned at the Bloggers BOF, we are a family. And I was being the black sheep (a role I never take).

I would like to thank Gab for her graciousness in offering to strike-through this and start over. She and I had a great AIM session and this was easily worked through. I offered to delete the post which was something she agreed to let me do. I hope that we can all put this behind us and move forward with what we've learned at Lotusphere. Honestly, everytime I think about it now I feel physically sick! Gab is an amazing administrator and a wonderful speaker - that Cluster Jumpstart was awesome!! We all have a lot to learn from her!

Sadly, there was some confusion on the GURU stage and I was hearing something that was not intended to be heard that way. I followed through completely in the wrong way. I have blogged about this particular Sametime problem here starting in June, 2005 (and, ironically, I even had a crash in the closing session...). So it was something personal for me I have been dealing with for nearly 8 months and I felt my comments were being slighted (which they were not). This was no excuse. I have corresponded with 2 others who have contacted me about this. I probably deserved to be raked over the coals by them, but they both were overly kind and fatherly to me in their correction of my wrong - so thank you!

SeaWorld Was Great! (LS06)

I had a great time last night. I rode over with Christopher Byrne and Deborah Latter. They are the compliance and change control gurus! We had a blast hanging out. Other than Christopher running from the impending soak from Shamu, it was awesome. We actually didn't get soaked.

Well, I'm in an Activity Centric Collaboration session that's just starting. This is something revolutionary that IBM is working on for users to "organize the work around activities." Think of being able to have an activity in Notes and easily organize and share (via RSS) the activity and dropping files, emails, IMs, etc... Awesome stuff!

Bloggers' BOF (LS06)

I believe I may be the first post about it - sorry I didn't make the JamFest tonight. I don't want to get sweaty before dinner tonight! I was going to email my Blogspot account to post directly from the BOF, but decided not to. There was no wi-fi there, so the rest of the bloggers couldn't post. It was a really good BOF - especially being able to meet some new people. Ed Brill was the moderator and there were some great comments and questions.

The main thing that I would echo is that if you're not currently blogging, go ahead and start. You should also not hesitate to comment at other blogs. This at least gets your name out there and helps to make friends (or enemies...). I can really attest to something that Ed said.

He mentioned that blogging is a very good way to not only get your name out in the community, but also that it can help you get noticed by those who approve sessions (he pointed out that many of the people in the room were also speakers) and provides a means for them to see how well you communicate. While I generally will post techy items, you don't need to have a tech blog to "get noticed." Like Jess said at the BOF, you just have to post about things that others will find interesting. Even if it's just that you saw some strange shape made by your Cheerios. I would definitely say that being active in this community aided in the approval of the session I co-presented.

I look forward to staying active and hopefully being able to add feeds for some new bloggers who may have been inspired at the BOF!

Who's going to JamFest Tuesday Night? (LS06)

Just wondering who's planning on coming? I'm up in the air on it... Comment if so.

Day One (LS06)

Okay, so this is a little late as I'm waiting for the 2nd class on Day 2 to start. It's on DDM - which as you know is something I'm really liking about Domino 7.

Anyway, Day 1 went great. As I've previously posted, Kim Greene and my session went very well. I also checked out Lance and Dwight's session on AJAX and DXL. I'm looking forward to getting their application. I spent some time on the showcase floor too. Got my LotusUserGroup.org shirt (can't remember her name, but the LUG lady knew me as "The iSeries Guy"). I also got my "I'm a L.U.G. NUT!" pin. It's fitting because my nickname is Nut (short for Whisonant) and I didn't want the "Sametime Stud" or "Domino Diva" pins!

I also went to a session on Web Services but it wasn't what I was hoping for.

Last night was the JamFest also. It was cool but I didn't even get up to play. There were many more "eager" players... But it was great to meet and hang out with people. After the JamFest was karaoke at Kimono's. It was the first time I had been. I didn't sing, but many did and some were good. I left way earlier than the ones who stayed to close it down...

Our iSeries Session At Lotusphere 2006 (LS06)

The IBM Lotus Domino for IBM iSeries Administration and Performance Best Practices session that Kim Greene and I did went really well. Kim was great to work with, and maybe we can try this again next year with some updated information. If you attended the session, THANK YOU. If you didn't attend (B.E.) just remember that I can now heckle you at your sessions. We were in a fairly small room, but we probably filled around 85% of the seats. Kim and I also enjoyed hanging out with a few of the attendees afterwards answering some questions. This was a really great experience and I would like to thank IBM (especially Rocky's Best Practices team) and Kim for the opportunity to present.

Here is a link to the Color PDF of the presentation. I will also be placing a link on the menu over on the left.

Prepped for Session and Sametime News Story (LS06)

I just finished reviewing my part of the BP406 session. I'm really pumped about it!

Also, I've already had one power user from back home send me a Yahoo! news story about IBM integrating AOL, Y!, and Google IM platforms into Sametime 7.5. The word is getting around!

On that note, IBM really was pressing the point that they are the innovators in this arena during the Opening General Session.

Opening General Session (LS06)

This thing is packed!! Word is that the entire front section is just for the press. Some major announcements - just see these highlights:

* Jason Alexander speaks! He's hilarious...
* DWA and Notes with Sametime for Mac - live demo!
* Over 1500 Notes wins over Exchange!

* Wanda - Portable Notes on USB stick
* Notes/SAP integration next quarter - prior to MS/SAP integration
* This was the feature Rocky was talking about
* IM on BlackBerry - in Message window not separate chat app
* Web Services on BB
* Connectivity with AIM, Y!, and Google Talk!! WOW! With no additional purchase.
* Sametime 7.5 - emoticons too! Voice Chat, built on Eclipse! Screen capture to put in chat
* Better UI for Web Conferencing too
* 15 Million users of Sametime
* IBM Workplace Forms - very nice!

Jumpstart Day (LS06)

Today has gone well. As others have said, the numbers have increased this year about 15% (almost along the lines of Lotus' growth too!) I went to two sessions today and met with Kim Greene to go over our presentation. I also saw on Chris Miller's blog that iCollaborate for iSeries was announced. I'm anxious to see what this is. Hopefully it will be among the announcements tomorrow. It was also really great to start putting faces with people!!

The first session I went to was the Java Jumpstart for the Domino Developer from Tom Duff and Julian Robichaux. This was a great session!! As Julian posted last week, he had a demo of a Pie Chart and Bar Graph all from within Notes. It was a great session, but I didn't win a prize. This session was packed out in a fairly large room. The highlights were Julian squirting Tom with a watergun (as part of a coding example) and also Julian's laser pionter (a.k.a. Red Light Saber!!)

Speaking of prizes, though, I did get two t-shirts. Bruce Elgort gave me an OpenNTF.org shirt and Lance Spellman gave me the coveted "Take Your Exchange Server and SHOVE It!" shirt. Also, John Roling gave me an "I'm A Sicko!" button. Awesome - thanks guys...

The second session I went to was An Introduction to All Things IBM Lotus Domino Clustering by Gabriella Davis. To be a strictly admin session, there was a packed room here too. It was a good session and I have some notes on some clustering things I would like to implement. However, I disagree with her statement that clustered unread marks are fixed as of 6.5. I know I've seen these still get out of sync. It is true that there is now a setting to control this, but with server and/or client crashes this number can be skewed across replicas.

New Domino 7 for iSeries NotesBench Results

250,500 users!! on a 16-way i5 Model 595.

Here is the report.

My question to an IBMer was:

Were there any gains by using V5R4 as opposed to V5R3?

Since I just posted this, I also got an email back from IBM on the results. Basically, you should just note that the processor speed being used in the NotesBench is 1.9GHz (the current i595 processor is 1.65GHz...) You figure out what that means! Should be a new hardware announcement with V5R4.

Also, from previous performance reports we know that the R6 workload performs better than R7.

It's also interesting that it was completed by October 19, 2005 on what must have been "beta" versions of the Operating System that isn't even out yet.

I'll have to look through the full reports that are attached to the NotesBench report.

Random Thoughts for Today...

The Dilbert for today just seems to be on the money with the whole "Red Bull" thing...

I've been using the BlackBerry 8700c for a couple of days now and it's great. Perhaps the best feature by far is the EDGE Internet service. It's FAST!!

On the ride down to Sphere, I'm planning on cramming for the Lotus 610 exam to get my first Dev certification. I took it once about 1.5 years ago and missed it by two questions (literally...). I should get it this time. If I pass it I may also attempt exam 623 to finish up my Advanced Admin certification. And if that goes well, I may try for the Domino 7 admin update, but there may not be time for all of that! Although when I went to an iSeries COMMON conference in 2003 I passed 4 advanced admin exams.

i5/OS V5R4 and Storage Changes

Several weeks ago I posted links to an expected February 2006 release for V5R4 of i5/OS. My Business Partner is now telling me to expect an announcement in February as well, so that seems pretty much confirmed.

On that note, I have some more technical observations about some things in this article from The Four Hundred (that I mentioned in the previous post).

According to Herring, starting with the Power5+ generation, IBM is going to do away with the idea of requiring IOPs for storage....The AS/400 architecture was always unique in that it supported what is really asymmetric multiprocessing, with relatively modestly powered central processors hooked to legions of intelligent I/O processors that were equipped with microcode that allowed them to run what would otherwise be thought of as jobs suited for a central operating system. Going forward, IBM is doing away with this architecture, said Herring, as much to get the i5 and p5 lines in synch as to improve the availability of the i5 servers.

We also read that the old IOP architecture can remain. This is good to hear. Initially, I read into this that the entire IOP architecture would be removed. But after review, it's just the storage IOPs that will be removed. Another interesting observation about this is that IBM is working on having the i5 and p5 lines more closely related. We know that at IBM Rochester they build and ship i5 and p5 systems. As I have read from an IBMer, "It takes an iSeries to deliver a pSeries..." - meaning that the Rochester manufacturing lines use an iSeries with Domino to aid in the manufacturing of i5 and p5 systems!

Also in the article, we read that The difficulty of moving to a SAN architecture for storage with the iSeries has to do with the much-praised single-level storage in the platform. First, OS/400 needs to boot locally as it is currently written, Moreover, OS/400 needs to have both main memory and disk to create its single-level memory, and OS/400 doesn't share well. But the techies in Rochester are working on a way to boot OS/400 across a SAN fabric. Moreover, IBM is also working on a way to allow HA software to failover one server attached to a SAN to another server attached to the same SAN. To use Herring's words, this is like using a SAN as a logical independent auxiliary storage pool (iASP).

To quote Darth Vader - "Impressive. Most Impressive!" I have spoken with our IBM Customer Engineers on this and they have mentioned testing this with a customer in our area. So this is definitely not just an abstract IBM is considering.

Assistance Needed - Domino Development

We have a database in which we are getting poor view response times. Here are the general DB stats:

747 MB
179 MB View Index (24% of total db size!)
22,000 Documents
16,000 of the Docs in one of the views in question
About 200 documents edited per day on average

Here are some of the "basics" that I have checked:

Program Document running UPDALL -V on this specific DB every 30 minutes

Advanced Database Properties:

For the users, the view is embedded on a page showing them their own documents. Regardless of whether we open the view directly or via the page it takes several minutes to open, so this leads me to the view being the issue and not the Show Single Category criteria. That criteria is:

@If(@IsMember("[Admin]";@UserRoles);"*";@IsMember("[Post Proof]";@UserRoles); "Post-Proofing";@IsMember("[Pre Proof]";@UserRoles);"Pre-Proofing"; @IsMember("[Graphics]";@UserRoles);"Graphics";@Name([CN]; @UserName))

The view selection criteria is:

"Simple Search" - "uses 'Contract Tracking' form"

All columns refer to fields on the documents (i.e. no date/time functions in the view...):
ResponsiblePerson, Year, Directory, AccountNumber, ApplicancName, Status, CompletedBySales, DateCompleted

The first 3 columns are Categorized. The 4th column is sorted Ascending. None of the columns allow the user to sort.

Any further insights?

By the way, the newest Taking Notes podcast was really good about large-scale Domino deployments. Right up the alley of us iSeries guys...

Judge Alito Confirmation Hearings Start Today

As the proceedings take place, keep up with The Washington Post's Campaign For The Court blog. It will keep you informed of the major events taking place with the hearings.

Here is an excerpt from one of the posts over the weekend:

"Senate Democrats on Sunday promised a drawn-out confirmation and perhaps a filibuster for Samuel Alito if the Supreme Court nominee evades or refuses to answer their questions on abortion, presidential war powers and other issues..."

Also, I was reading from On Governmental Authority by Martin Luther from 1523. I find his advice fairly sufficient for our current discussions on the judiciary and the upcoming hearings:

"Besides, we cannot conceive how an authority could or should act in a situation except where it can see, know, judge, condemn, change, and modify. What would I think of a judge who should blindly decide cases which he neither hears nor sees?"

This is exactly what South Carolina's own Senator Lindsay Graham addresses in The Post's blog:

No, not at all. But let’s talk about the abortion question for a moment. When President Clinton chose twice -- he had two picks on his watch -- he chose Ginsberg and Breyer, people left of center. Justice Ginsberg openly embraced the idea that there was a constitutional right to an abortion.

I don’t agree with that, but Republicans who were pro-life and, I guess, a few Democrats who were pro-life, did not hold that position against her. They believed that she would decide the cases based on the facts and the law.

So we’re not going to sit back and watch a double standard to be imposed here. People who have come from Democratic nominees have openly embraced the idea that they believe there’s a constitutional right to abortion. They were not disqualified.

If Judge Alito advocated that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided, that is no -- that’s not a disqualifying event. An extraordinary circumstance could never be having a different philosophy. You expect Republicans to pick people differently than Democrats.

What I think an extraordinary circumstance would be -- someone’s character, integrity problems, or clearly they’re an ideologue, they don’t care what the law is, they’ve got their own agenda. There is no evidence of that in this case.

And the fact that he may disagree with somebody on a particular issue like abortion -- well, that happens all the time. That happens when Clinton picked Ginsberg and Breyer. She was the ACLU executive general counsel. I disagree with her about everything she basically advocated. But I can understand why she was given 96 votes.

That's Customer Service!

Last night I placed an order at BestBuy.com for a few items - so I could use the gift card I received for Christmas. I chose to pay online with the gift card and pick up in the store. Since we have a Best Buy about 4 minutes from my office I decided to just pick it up at lunch today. When the cashier handed me the items and said thank you, my BlackBerry notified me of a new email. I looked at it and it said "Thanks for picking up your order" from Best Buy. That was cool.

I know some people would think that's really cool technically. And while it is, it's still something that I do for a living. My wife asks our 2 year old what Daddy does and she says "Makes the e-mail". Pretty good answer! I think it's cool that shops are now doing those things, though.

Domino 7.0 Hotfix for HTTP

Lotus believes that the PTF I just loaded will fix our issues with HTTP crashing our mail server. It appears that there is an issue with Domino Web Access trying to get multiple handles on the same database from cache. As always, I will keep you all updated.

Also, I ran database maintenance on all the /DATA/*.nsf files that are locked when the server is active. This is something that I should do more often, but... It's also for a PMR I have open with Rooms and Resources failing. I'm hoping there's just some rogue corruption causing it. More on that later too!

A Christmas Gift From Lotus?

I'm anxiously awaiting an actual fix for our HTTP crash issue. I received an email late yesterday that they hope to have a fix out to me today. Here's hoping!

iSeries Down!

Well, it's back up now. But yesterday at 4:53 (right when we're about to leave for Christmas holidays at work), our cluser Domino iSeries 270 was unreachable. So we drove across town (funny how Domino can have a remote cluster!). My first thought was that the system was completely hosed. We still have those drives in our cluster system.

We arrived and found the system on a Main Storage Dump screen with the failing code being SRC B6000103. The system came back up great and that was the only error in the Product and Service Activity Logs. We called iSeries support and were sent a list of PTFs that should prevent this. We proceeded to load them and then IPL to apply them.

The thing that scares me is that this seems to be pretty random and it's possible that we could see this on another system.

The Christmas Story

The other night I watched a special (on NBC I believe) on the birth of Jesus. The first half included some non-orthodox scholars. The second half was with Ben Witherington, Professor of New Testament Interpretation at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky (is also in my Bloglines feeds). I will have to get into that TV special at a later date. But for now I would just like to present to you a generally chronological synopsis of the Christmas Story from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Those passages from Matthew are in italics. All scripture taken from the English Standard Version.

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!" But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." And Mary said to the angel, "How will this be, since I am a virgin?" And the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy--the Son of God. And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For nothing will be impossible with God." And Mary said, "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her. In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord." And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever." And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel" (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!" When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, "Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord") and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons." Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, "Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel." And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed." And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him." When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: "'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'" Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him." And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, "Out of Egypt I called my son." Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: "A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more." But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, "Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead." And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee.

And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled: "He shall be called a Nazarene."

And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth.

i5/OS V5R4 Release Date?

Speculation is that it will be released before February 2006. To be quite honest, I am on Domino so much that I don't keep up as much with the OS releases. But, from some further research, it will "include user interface, clustering, and database enhancements." It also appears to be a huge release - it's compared to the V4R5 to V5R1 conversion!!

Also, this is pretty interesting:

Herring said OS/400 admins have to wrestle with five different interfaces--including several green-screen interfaces, iSeries Navigator and OpsNav, and now the Hardware Management Console--to manage an iSeries box. "This seems a bit much for your average SMB customer." To that end, IBM will be redesigning the task-oriented OS/400 screens using AUIML and give it all a consistent look and feel. He also hinted that the Rochester team liked WebSphere Portal Express and that OS/400 functions would also start exploiting this technology to make OS/400 a little more user friendly.

How do you do Lotus upgrades?

What is your process for upgrading Servers, Templates, and Clients to the latest release?

Last week I finished upgrading all of our mail files to the DWA 7.0 template. On clients that are below the 7.0 version, the Tools > Preferences is not available from the mail folders. Lotus Support said that you should have the clients upgraded to the latest release before migrating the mail files. Of course, this makes sense. However, they did make it difficult with 7.0 because the client Smart Upgrade process was broken. (That is supposedly corrected in 7.0.1 as SPR# HXXE68T7Y5).

So, the correct procedure is as follows:

1) Upgrade server to latest release
2) Upgrade clients to match the server release
3) Upgrade mail file templates to match the client release

Domino 7.0 Updates

Well, this week we've averaged 2-3 HTTP crashes per day! Not what I was hoping for. From speaking with Lotus Support, it appears that we should be receiving the 3rd debugging PTF for our iSeries. They have pinpointed the problem to the database cache and this next debugging hotfix should allow them to get into the part of the code dealing with the cache to get a fix out soon (I hope!).

Also, we've been having some issues with the new 7.0 Rooms and Resources database. As part of my upgrade process, I did upgrade the databases to the 7.0 template. But after a month we are not able to book directly from the databases. We have several RnR databases for different locations or workgroups who had to be separate from the others... Anyway, this is happening for separate databases on the production and cluster replicas. The good news is that we are able to book via the C&S process by creating a meeting.

Merry Xmas!

It seems that about this time every year I will see someone write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper talking about the phrase "Merry Xmas." A few years ago I wrote this response.

The idea behind the statement was that Christ is removed from Christmas by using "Xmas." This is a common misconception. I am no Greek scholar, but according to Strong’s Greek Dictionary the Greek word for Christ is “Χριστός.” In English we would transliterate that as Christos (Xristos). As you can see in the Greek, the first letter of Christ is “X.”

Christmas simply means “the Christ mass.” It is a fact that 16th Century Europeans referred to the Christ mass as Xmas (and there are also uses of the words "Xian" and "Xianity"). It is possible that Xmas was used before this time, as it would be simple shorthand for Christmas, but my limited research has not proven this. Knowing these facts, it should be up to each individual as to how they will refer to Christmas. Originally, no disrespect was intended in substituting the first letter of Christ.

We must remember that Christmas is a long-standing tradition of the church and not a Biblical sacrament or ordinance. Perhaps we should concern ourselves more with what Christianity (and Christmas as well) should be all about: "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world." (Jam 1:27 ESV) I believe this is something on which we all need to work.

On another note, don't miss Kevin Presseault's outline from a sermon he gave on December 4. He makes some great points about the true peace that Jesus brought to us. And don't miss his Christmas CSS!

"I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." (Joh 16:33 ESV) Note that while we are in the world that things will go wrong (or be unpeaceful) but we should take care in the fact that the world has been overcome and that we can have inner peace that will flow from us into all of our relationships.

iSeries for Domino 7.0 Update and Funny Stories From Hamer

In a previous post, I stated that I thought the issues may have been stemming from a 3rd-Party HTTP failover system. We had over 10 days of uptime, but then yesterday we had a couple of crashes and some today as well. We're going to be loading another debug hotfix that Lotus is preparing (the 3rd one - if you're keeping count!). Also, Chris Miller has blogged about having this same issue.

If you want a laugh, check out this post, Tales from a Dillon History Teacher, from Chris Moody (best friend and co-worker). He posts some funny stuff that's generally from real life experiences. These are some stories from his dad's career as a teacher - you can't make up stuff like this!

My Realization

I'm getting old...

Not only is some gray hair coming in, but when we were on our vacation we were in a restaurant that was playing music from the 80s. So, my wife and I are singing along and I'm thinking how great (or tragic!!) it is for our daughter to be hearing it. Then I thought back to my childhood for a moment. I remembered going to the same beach with my parents and brother. But when we were children in the 80s, we had to suffer through our parents listening to that horrible "Oldies" music from the 60s.

This is about when it hit me - that Oldies music from my childhood was a mere 20 years old in the 80s. Now, music that is 20 years old is from my childhood and is basically considered "Oldies" music. Oh, and let's not forget to look below at the "Now Playing" section - I'm still stuck in the 80s!!

Shhh... Don't Say It Too Loud

But our mail server hasn't crashed since last Friday morning...

We have been testing out a product to provide some HTTP traffic clustering and failover capabilities. That server had powered off over the weekend and I intentionally left the service disabled. Basically it acts as a proxy to a set of servers and it polls for HTTP availability every so often (5 seconds in my testing).

Well, so far this week we have not had any mail server crashes.

I'm wondering if this could be contributing to the problem. Though I am fairly certain that HTTP has crashed while this was server was previously inactive and we also had it testing with 6.5.4 FP2 with no issues.

I have informed Lotus about this possibly attributing to it. Will keep you informed...

The Samaritans (Of Biblical Times)

Back in June I was reading The Books and The Parchments by F.F. Bruce. Chapter 10 is about "The Samaritan Pentateuch." Basically, the Samaritan Jews only believe that the Pentateuch (First 5 books of the Bible - those penned by Moses) is Canonical and they have preserved their translation of the Pentateuch separate from the Hebrew scriptures. This is highly beneficial to the story of the transmission of our Biblical texts. But that's not really the most intriguing thing about this chapter, though.

For much of us, when we've come to the story of the Woman at the Well, in John 4, and hear about the Samaritans, the "milk" answer we hear at church is that the Samaritans are basically a mixed-race breed of Jews. This is only partially true. In this chapter, Bruce relates to us the full, "meat" answer to the question "Who are the Samaritans?" I will paraphrase and quote some from this 10th Chapter of Bruce's book (pages 125-132 in my edition).

Around 587 B.C., when Nebuchadnezzar brought Judah to an end, many Jews were deported to Mesopotamia. Upon returning, "the Samaritans and others who had not gone into exile offered to cooperate with them, but their offer was turned down." After not being allowed to partake of worship at the Jerusalem temple, around 400 B.C., the Samaritans built a temple near Shechem at Mount Gerizim. See John 4:20 (Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.). The Jews, of course, did not want anything to do with the Samaritans and made light of some of the foreigners in their midst (this was the racial tension).

Moving forward some centuries, around 108 B.C., John Hyrcanus (a Jewish revolutionary from the Maccabeean family) took over Samaria and destroyed the Gerizim temple. This only added fuel to the fire of the hatred between the two groups. The no longer had to worry about Jewish occupation after the Romans took power. They still remain in Palestine. "They have preserved their ancient traditions and worship at the place called Nablus, near the ancient Shechem, where some 250 of them still live; another fifty or so live at Tel-Aviv."

"They have preserved their traditional expectation of the Messiah, whom they call the Taheb, or 'Restorer'; they envisage him primarily as a second Moses - the one of whom Moses said: 'Jehovah thy God will raise up unto thee a prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken'(Deut. 18:15). They distinguish two main divisions of their history - the period of divine favour (rahutha) from Moses to Eli, and the period of divine displeasure (panutha) from Eli to the Taheb, through whom the divine favour will be restored. It was the Taheb that the woman at Jacob's well had in mind when she said, 'I know that Messiah is coming...when he comes, he will show us all things' (John 4:25); and it was with the Taheb that Jesus identified Himself when He replied to her, 'I who speak to you am he' (John 4:26)."

New Mail Template Rollout

We started rolling out the Domino Web Access 7.0 template to our users Monday evening. So far we've upgraded about 1/3 of the mail files. Some strange things we've seen on about 5% of the upgrades are that in Notes some of their folders show "Replication or Save Conflict" for all of the documents in the folder. Deleting the cache.ndk seems to correct this in most cases. Otherwise, FIXUP -F and/or UPDALL -r corrects it.

Debugging for Domino (Update)

I have added two more debug parameters to the Debugging for Domino blog entry. The updated content reflects the new debugging parameters I have added, per Lotus Support, to my Notes.ini in order to troubleshoot our http issues. By they way, may I add some kudos to Lotus (again) for the great work they have done with the Domino Web Administration database with 7.0. I was able to quickly use it to make sure my syntax was correct for the SHOW STAT command. The 7.0 webadmin.nsf is very slick and fast!

9.) DEBUG_HTTP_DBCLOSE=1 Anytime there is an http close of an NSF file it dumps to the console.

10.) DEBUG_TRACK_FREEHANDLE=1 I could not find anything specific to Domino debugging. From this DB2 page it "frees resources associated with a specific environment, connection, statement, or descriptor handle." Information on the freehandles in your Domino environment can be seen through the SHOW STAT DATABASE.FREEHANDLE*:
> Database.FreeHandleStack.FreeHandleStackHits = 3352913
> Database.FreeHandleStack.HandleAllocations = 3356284
> Database.FreeHandleStack.MissRate = 0
> 3 statistics found

...

The following represents the debugging I have in my notes.ini currently to assist in troubleshooting my 7.0 errors - you can see that I have turned off several and enabled some others:

DEBUG_THREADID=1
DEBUG_DBSERVER=0
DEBUG_SHOW_TIMEOUT=1
DEBUG_CAPTURE_TIMEOUT=10
DEBUG_TRACK_FREEHANDLE=1
DEBUG_HTTP_DBCLOSE=1
DEBUG_NTI_DRVR=0
DEBUG_TCP_ALL=0
DEBUG_TCP_ERRORS=0
DEBUG_OUTFILE=DEBUG.TXT
CONSOLE_LOG_ENABLED=1

On my menu there is now a button for an RSS Comments Web Feed (just thought I would start calling it a "web feed" since that's what it will be known as when MS gets done with it!). But if you're interested in keeping up with the few comments that exist, then check it out...

Blackberry Version 4.0 Service Pack 3 Hot Fix #1

There is a hotfix for BES 4.0.3 available:

Download the software.

View the release notes.

There are only a few fixes including one that I saw on my system:

Previously, in certain circumstances, if you restarted the computer on which the BlackBerry Enterprise Server resides, the BlackBerry Dispatcher, BlackBerry Synchronization Service, and BlackBerry Policy Service failed to start.
